Demos: 5A-08 Electric Field Lines of Two Point Charges

This demonstration gives a visual representation of electric field lines near two point charges. Start the demonstration by charging both spheres with like charges. Attach a lead from the Van de Graaff generator to the first sphere. Attach a second lead from the first sphere to the second sphere so when the Van de Graaff is operating, the spheres will have like charges. Notice the movement of the crepe paper plumes attached to the spheres. When the plumes have stabilized, you have a representation of electric field lines caused by two like charges. Stop the Van de Graaff, discharge both spheres and reconnect the leads so that the two spheres are oppositely charged. Keep the first lead connected from the first sphere to the Van de Graaff. Take the second lead from the second sphere and attach it to ground on the Van de Graaff. Turn on the Van de Graaff and notice the motion of the crepe paper plumes now. You have a representation of electric field lines caused by two unlike charges.
