Undergraduates and Research

The Department of Physics has an international reputation for the excellence of it's research. We strongly encourage undergraduates to participate in our research groups starting as early as the second semester. This involvement is a very positive educational experience and provides an opportunity to learn practical skills and research techniques at the very forefront of basic science. It also is a great help in setting future career directions and is an asset in getting internships and employment.

This involvement is not for everyone particularly as early as the second semester and sometimes an appropriate match between student and Professor cannot be made. However, we endeavor to fulfill the needs of all our students who wish to participate in the research experience.

There are competitive research scholarships known as the Ascarelli scholarships which are awarded to entering first year physics majors based on their academic record which provides support for them to work in a research area. Individual professors from their research grants support other students.
