Postdoctoral Research Associate in Astroparticle Physics

The Dark Matter group at Purdue University invites applications for a post-doc position. The group is working on the XENON1T, XENONnT and LBECA Dark Matter experiments.

The XENON1T detector is currently taking data at the Gran Sasso Underground Laboratory in Italy and was recently used to place the world’s most stringent limits on WIMP Dark Matter interactions. Its upgrade XENONnT will be installed in the same infrastructure later this year. LBECA is a new effort to swiftly build a dedicated, kg-scale liquid xenon experiment to probe in particular sub-GeV Dark Matter. Experiments with additional detectors are being performed at Purdue to push the sensitivity of these devices towards new signals.

The appointee will play a leading role in the calibration group of XENONnT, in analyzing data from the XENON1T experiment, and in the LBECA collaboration. The Purdue group is particularly interested in searching for signals from unconventional Dark Matter models, in making a first measurement of solar boron-8 neutrinos via coherent neutrino-nucleus scattering, and to be ready to detect neutrinos from the next Galactic supernova. Related questions concern the calibration of large-scale liquid noble gas detectors and the mitigation of backgrounds that are relevant for such low-energy signals.

A PhD in physics or a related field is required. Experience with Dark Matter search experiments, liquid noble elements, low-background techniques, statistical methods, data analysis and Monte Carlo simulations will be advantageous. Applicants should provide a statement of research interests and prior expertise, a curriculum vitae with list of publications, and arrange for three letters of reference to be sent directly. Applications and the letters of reference should be directed to Dr. Rafael Lang, c/o Emjai Gregory, Purdue University, Department of Physics and Astronomy, 525 Northwestern Avenue, West Lafayette, Indiana 47907, USA preferably via email, egregor@purdue.edu. The position is open until filled with a starting date to be agreed upon. Purdue University is an Equal Opportunity Affirmative Action Employer fully committed to achieving a diverse workforce. Applicants from underrepresented groups are especially encouraged to apply.
